New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these drugs need to be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
