The artist has donated the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which functions to preserve the UK's small concert spaces.

Fender was presented with the prize on 16 October as his new release People Watching was named the top album of the last 12 months.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the essential function grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – approximately 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, major artists such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which benefits smaller concert halls.

He also participated, generating more than £100,000 on his recent tour to help numerous local spots across the UK.

The donation assisted spaces that were facing possible closure due to issues caused by flooding, fires and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces were granted monetary aid in modernizing facilities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted artists and audiences.

"The idea that revenue from performances in big venues supports the smaller venues, where it begins for musicians like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has said.

Also the 1994 recipients they contributed their prize to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was identified with the condition.

"Winning was sufficient," remarked singer Small. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't require the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

Recently, the trust announced it had saved a couple of small stages in that region, by bringing them into community ownership.

One venue in Southampton and The Croft in the city were bought under the community ownership program, which is supported by Arts Council England and supporters who purchase "stakes" in the venues.
