Everyone Are Invited to Become the Fourth Haim Member.
"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."
There is only one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're not alone. Several celebrated supporters have also petitioned for the honor.
One thing is obvious a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy contenders.
Similar to the best bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their visuals often show them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be part of that, too."
"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to form a group."
"So all is invited to be the next part of the family."
Historic Milestone
The band have called into a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.
They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards â with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.
"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"
The importance of the honor isn't lost on the band.
"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."
Emotional Upheaval and Candor
The record was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that strange in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.
The themes follow breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they aspire to be.
"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."
Refinement of Music
That recent confidence demanded a new sound â more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.
For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drums.
"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."
Stories and Shared Camaraderie
The band's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.
A former partner ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.
"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."
A Secure Legacy
It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.
They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.
Yet the band will consistently be their primary focus.
"We have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
