Colombia's President Declares 'I Would Return to Arms Again' if United States Intervenes Militarily.

President Trump and his Colombian counterpart have escalated the tone in their verbal conflict, further raising strains in their relations after US forces targeted Venezuela with the aim of deposing the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He operates narcotics facilities and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," the US president stated.

Rising Tensions coupled with Claims

Talking to reporters on Sunday, the US president threatened analogous use of force against Bogotá, asserting the nation is also "very ill" and governed by a problematic figure who likes making the drug and selling it to the United States."

Although Colombia is the leading producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the trade.

A Deteriorating Relationship

Colombia was historically a close partner of the United States in the campaign combating drug cartels and received bipartisan support in Washington, but relations have worsened dramatically since Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is predominantly run by illegal armed groups such as the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and dissident factions of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members disbanded after a landmark accord.

The President's Defiant Rebuttal

In response to a query whether armed intervention like that in Venezuela was being considered against his country, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea to me."

The Colombian leader, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle in the 1990s, firmly denied the accusations. "I am not an illegitimate leader and I am not a drug trafficker," he declared.

"Trump speaks without information. End the false accusations," he expressed online.

"If they [the US] bomb civilians, they will transform into thousands of guerrillas in the hills. And should they arrest the president, whom a large part of the country holds in high esteem, they will unleash the powerful force of the people," he admonished.

From Insurgent to President

Petro spent part of his youth as a member in the left-wing M-19 armed organization but is not believed to have ever engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he was involved in writing the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago and eventually served as an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital before winning the nation's highest office.

"I pledged not to touch a weapon again ... but in defense of my country I shall resume the fight," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures along with Broad Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that Petro's security detail was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, however, leaders from across the ideological divide have condemned the notion of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Financial Strains

Washington cancelled the president's entry visa subsequent to he called on US troops to disobey any illegal orders. Months later, authorities imposed economic restrictions against the president, the first lady and a number of key allies.

At the same time while America bolstered its military presence in the Caribbean and targeting suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US also carried out operations on maritime targets off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
