A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
